Mitigation

Climate change mitigation aims at reducing significantly the impacts caused by human activities on climate, and

“stabilize greenhouse gas levels in a timeframe sufficient to allow ecosystems to adapt naturally to climate change, ensure that food production is not threatened, and to enable economic development to proceed in a sustainable manner” - the 2014 report on Mitigation of Climate Change from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

Mitigation measures comprise technologies, procedures, and applications that reduce the sources of anthropogenic emissions or enhance the sinks accumulation and storage of those gases. 

What satellite technology can do for mitigation :

Space-derived data are highly efficient in exploring new ways of sustainable development, such as for instance smart agriculture where Satellites can help in improving crop yields while reducing the cultivating land, therefore preventing land degradation. Satellite navigation contributes to climate change mitigation by enabling calculations of the most fuel-efficient routes in the transportation sector. Earth observation supports the establishment of the optimal sites for wind or solar farms, by monitoring wind speed and direction or estimating surface solar radiations.
